It's fun to create your own crossword, but I've always found that using puzzle maker software really takes all of the fun out of it. I was raised by hyper-literate parents. My father was a professor of English, my mother, a reporter and freelance writer. In that environment, the best way to impress someone was to create your own crossword to show your grasp of the English language. I remember sitting down with graph paper, puzzling for hours how to get the words to fit just right, and what clue would be just hard enough to present a challenge. You can create your own crossword with the simplest, or the most complicated words, but when you do it right, no matter what, they will fall neatly and perfectly together into a seamless whole.
I've often wondered why so many things in life aren't like that. Maybe that is the thrill of puzzles, that they allow us to imagine a better world. When you create your own crossword puzzle, you are making a mini world in which, through reason and knowledge and a little intuition, the player can make everything fall right into place. If only life were that easy, we would never need puzzle makers. Then again, maybe life is the ultimate puzzle itself.
